Day 5- Porsmork to Hasadalur

Porsmork is an absolutely beautiful spot, and we could have stayed and hiked in that region for days.

The hut sits in a valley beside the river, and is very cute

There are glaciers ( with volcano's underneath!) to the north and south..(sorry my panorama shots got worse and worse, but you get the idea!)

Its very popular for parties, so you don't come here in summer if you don't want to share it with pissed students. On new years eve everyone comes and dances around bonfires, and a midnight goes to the elf cave ( straight across the river) at midnight to welcome in the new year..how cool!!
The hiking was great today, less layers, and as usual beautiful views

We hiked south, which took us right past the Eyjafjaliajokull volcano that erupted this year. These mountain tops should be white, as they are a glacier, but they are covered in ash from the eruption, which is just starting to wash away in places

we had amazing views ( and some shortness of breath from the climb!)

I had not realised we would be so close, this next photo shows the actual crater!!

When the eruption happened there was a massive flood that filled the river beds we were looking down into, and flooded for many kms out to sea.

And then we were finished, at the Hasaladur Hut, where all the drinkers paid 1000 Icelandic Krona ( $10 ) for beer that was 2% alcohol, as it had turned into a warm afternoon.

Then headed home on the bus, making the usual excuses about why I didn't want to have dinner with the group in Reykjavik ( you know what its like when people bond and then can't let go!!). Turns out no one had dinner as everyone got home and realised how tired and smelly they were.
